This chapter focuses on the year 1967, which was a time for experimentation in the music business. In Memphis, the success of the records on which Chips Moman and Tommy Cogbill played had alerted the powers that be, particularly at Atlantic, to the fact that Memphis was worth further investigation. The chapter also describes the Muscle Shoals musicians’ trip to New York City to work on Aretha Franklin’s album.
