The first night after he returned to his apartment with wife Marian in Lexington, New York City, John Clellon Holmes began writing his new novel. On October 9, 1949, he and Jack Kerouac enrolled in classes at the New School for Social Research. Kerouac then abruptly made a confused trip to California to join Neal Cassady. Upon his return, he worked on the final revisions for his novel The Town and the City before it went into production. Meanwhile, Alan Harrington asked if he could stay with Holmes while he finished his book The Revelations of Dr. Modesto. Holmes composed a poem for Kerouac and his new wife Joan Haverty on their wedding day, although it was never published.
