“Segregation Is Incompatible with the Christian Gospel”
“Segregation Is Incompatible with the Christian Gospel”
Mississippi, 1955–56
This chapter describes Gray’s activities from 1955 to 1956. These include the statement he drafted on behalf of the Department of Christian Social Relations for the Fourth Province of the Episcopal Church, regarding the Court’s decision in Brown. The statement began with what was, in effect, a direct refutation of the views expressed by segregationist leaders. It garnered mixed reactions from white Mississippi Episcopalians.
