This chapter begins with a discussion of the demise of the black activist-athlete. It then sets out the book’s purpose, which is to a conduct historical investigation of the public discourse and political culture surrounding Curt Flood, a black professional baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals throughout the 1960s. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
