This chapter describes an incident that took place in Howard Beach, Queens, on December 20, 1986, when three black men were attacked by white teenagers, leading to the death of one of the men, twenty-three-year-old Michael Griffith. On December 22, Jon Lester, 17, Jason Ladone, 16, and Scott Kern, 17, were arrested and charged with second-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in connection with Griffith’s death. On Wednesday, January 7, 1987, the City Sun weighed in with a copyrighted cover story, “Lawyers Ask: Why So Many Missing Links?”. The paper presented interviews with lawyers Alton Maddox, who represented the beating victim, and C. Vernon Mason, who represented Timothy Grimes.
