Three Survivors, One Interview

(p.127) Bridges of Katrina
Second Line Rescue

Nicole Eugene

University Press of Mississippi

This chapter begins with the author’s account of how she left New Orleans after moving there just a week before residents were asked to evacuate in preparation for Hurricane Katrina. She says that Katrina was more of a non-experience than a real experience, because she was not in New Orleans when it hit. She describes how the Surviving Katrina and Rita in Houston project gave her a reason to connect with a network of fellow survivors, and experience Katrina vicariously through these stories and these relationships. She also recounts an interview with survivors Henry Armstrong and his mother, Dorothy Griffin.
