“No White and Legal Heir”
The Responsibility of Whiteness in a Multiracial World
The conclusion posits that whiteness is based on a nonrelational epistemology that denies its dependence on an Africanist presence to construct itself. The literature of white estrangement challenges white self-delusion about its independence and provides an oppositional gaze that exposes a longing for interracial, human connection within whiteness. It is a vantage point that calls attention not only to the compromises and lapses of the individual, the distance between how Whites want to live their lives and the lives they actually live, but also to the social inconsistencies, contradictions, and failures of Whiteness. This tradition has been an important tool in the arsenals of African American intellectuals attempting to create a society in which the promise and dignity of all people was recognized and honored.
