Père Rouquette and Other Early Francophone Poets
Père Rouquette and Other Early Francophone Poets
This chapter surveys briefly early Louisiana poetry, an early drama, and travel writing, all in French, then examines especially the careers and literary production of Adrien Rouquette, a priest, and his brother, Dominique Rouquette. Adrien’s early years are sketched. His nature poetry receives particular emphasis in connection with the theme of the wilderness; samples are quoted (with translations). His prose romance called La Nouvelle Atala is examined at length for its connection to a masterpiece by Chateaubriand and its views on nature and religion. Other poets of the period are also reviewed, especially the leper Alexandre Latil and Amadeo Morel, author of a poem on the 1856 hurricane at Grand Isle.
