This chapter tells the anecdote of American jazz pianist Chick Corea’s fascination with the tumba rhythm. He was onboard the Freewinds, a yacht that was docked at Willemstad harbor. In a café in Otrobanda he had heard local music being played, the tumba. The next day he had gone back to the café, this time staying some four hours, requesting one song after another. He had taken notes, about the rhythm, about the melodies. Once back on the ship he had gone to the piano and started improvising, based on his notes. Playing a concert on the ship for an audience of locals he invited them to give him pointers on what he was playing. On his next album he included a number called Tumba Island.
